My First Pickup Truck

My first pickup truck was a 1977 Chevrolet Short Bed pickup that I bought used in 1979. Six cylinder with a three in the tree transmission. I had a camper shell put on it and then took three weeks off from work(two weeks payed and one extra week without pay) and went on a road trip from Michigan to the west coast and back.
Just me and my best dog friend Shannon. I put a single bed mattress in the back of the pickup for me and a blanket on the front seat for Shannon. The whole trip we stayed at KOA Campgrounds or we camped on the beach along the pacific coast highway.

Those trucks are worth a small fortune now!

My first pick up was a 1980 Chevy 3/4 ton, w/Custom Deluxe interior, 250 straight six, 4 on the floor, charcoal grey. Ordered with full gauge package(but arrived with idiot lights), no radio, I installed a Radio Shack sound system.
Traded it in a year and 1/2 later, got what I paid for it. That was the last brand new vehicle I have owned. Was traded towards a slightly used Z28.

My favorite song back then was:

Yes, the 225ci version, the smaller one was a 170 something ci. They were a pretty good basic car for their day but rusted out in weird places like over the headlights. Had torsion bar front suspension which was somewhat of an oddity used by Chrysler back then.
Tough engine, I had a friend who bought a Massey Ferguson combine with this slant 6.
I put him a roof mount Kysor A C on the cab.

The slant six was a good engine but none of the engines back then could rack up the mileage they do today. Lot of problems came from sludge buildup with only a breather pipe for the blowby. If you got 150k out of an engine back then it was almost miraculous. You didn't rack up the easy highway miles back then either.
